We are regular visitors to Rhodes and regard it as our 2nd home! We stay in Kolymbia at the Atlantica Imperial Resort and always collect our car from Rodos Cars at the airport. The car affords us total freedom and we have visited some magical places, either by design or total accident, during our visits.
Perched above the Alpine style hotel on Profitis Ilias is one such find - Villa de Vecchi, the remains of Mussolini's Summer House. Follow the road from Kolymbia past Seven Springs, through Eleousa (which is also worth a look with partially derelict buildings from the Italian occupation) and continue up through the trees.
The roads are winding but the surface is good - better than most of our smaller A and B roads in the UK.
Park at the hotel and look upwards away from it and you'll see the structure. There are paths that can be traversed but trainers would be better than sandals as it is quite rocky.
A fantastic chance to see some history close up and the views to the west of the island are utterly stunning.
